Southern Water has finally managed to restore water supply to more than 25,000 properties in St Leonards and Hastings who have been without water since Thursday evening when a water main burst.

The water main burst in remote woodland The burst happened deep in woodland in Keeper's Wood, near the A21 and was finally repaired by Saturday morning. Southern Water said the remote location had made getting teams and machinery to the site extremely challenging.
Southern Water informed customers on Thursday that due to the complex nature of the repair, and the time it takes to restart the network, the incident was expected to go into the bank holiday weekend.
Following the repair of the burst main, teams have been working to get the water treatment works at Beauport up and running. Beauport is capable of supplying 18.5 million litres of water a day (more than 214 litres a second) but it has taken some time for water supply to return as the utility has had to recharge the network and restart the supply works.

Southern Water has been deploying a fleet of 24 tankers to support affected areas, together with opening a number of bottled water stations and delivering bottled water to customers on its Priority Services Register.
To preserve supply to the part of Hastings including the hospital as the company fully recharged the network, around 3,500 homes in the east of the town lost supply temporarily as a short-term precautionary measure - essential to ensure the hospital remained in supply.
Some 7,500 properties currently still remain affected, although the vast majority - some 6,000, are expected to be back on supply later today. However, around 1,500 properties in parts of St Helen’s and St Helen’s Wood, which are normally served by the Fairlight reservoir, are unlikely to see supply restored until tomorrow morning or lunchtime. This is because the reservoir is not yet sufficiently stocked to meet the demand.
The remaining properties are also the furthest areas from the supply works – which is pumping more than 18 million litres of water into the network every 24 hours.
